Purgatory: Purifying Fire or Fatal Fable by Mike Gendron

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,”
Jude 1:24

Purgatory: Purifying Fire or Fatal Fable

Catholics who believe a purifying fire will purge away their sins are deluded victims of a fatal fabrication. The invention of a place for purification of sins called Purgatory is one of the most seductive attractions of the Roman Catholic religion. Pastor John MacArthur of Grace Community Church described this deceptive hoax brilliantly. He said: “Purgatory is what makes the whole system work. Take out Purgatory and it’s a hard sell to be a Catholic. Purgatory is the safety net, when you die, you don’t go to hell. You go [to Purgatory] and get things sorted out and finally get to heaven if you’ve been a good Catholic. In the Catholic system you can never know you’re going to heaven. You just keep trying and trying…in a long journey toward perfection. Well, it’s pretty discouraging. People in that system are guilt-ridden, fear-ridden and have no knowledge of whether or not they’re going to get into the Kingdom. If there’s no Purgatory, there’s no safety net to catch me and give me some opportunity to get into heaven. It’s a second chance, it’s another chance after death” (from “The Pope and the Papacy”).

The Origin of Purgatory

There was no mention of Purgatory during the first two centuries of the church. However, when Roman Emperor Theodosius (379-395) decreed that Christianity was to be the official religion of the empire, thousands of pagans flooded into the Church and brought their pagan beliefs and traditions with them. One of those ancient pagan beliefs was a place of purification where souls went to make satisfaction for their sins.

The concept became much more widespread around 600 A.D. due to the fanaticism of Pope Gregory the Great. He developed the doctrine through visions and revelations of a Purgatorial fire. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia (CE), Pope Gregory said Catholics “will expiate their faults by purgatorial flames,” and “the pain [is] more intolerable than any one can suffer in this life.” Centuries later, at the Council of Florence (1431), it was pronounced an infallible dogma. It was later reaffirmed by the Council of Trent (1564). The dogma is based largely on Catholic tradition from extra-biblical writings and oral history. “So deep was this belief ingrained in our common humanity that it was accepted by the Jews, and in at least a shadowy way by the pagans, long before the coming of Christianity” (CE). It seems incomprehensible that Rome would admit to using a pagan tradition for the defense of one of its most esteemed “Christian” doctrines.

The Deception of Purgatory

Purgatory comes from the Latin word “purgare,” which means to make clean or to purify.  The Catholic Encyclopedia defines purgatory as “a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God’s grace, are not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.” They must be purified of these “venial” sins before they can be allowed into heaven. Here we see Catholicism perpetuating the seductive lie of Satan by declaring “you will not surely die” when you commit venial sins (Gen. 3:4). The Council of Trent dares to declare that “God does not always remit the whole punishment due to sin together with the guilt. God requires satisfaction and will punish sin…The sinner, failing to do penance in this life, may be punished in another world, and so not be cast off eternally from God.” (Session 15, Can. XI). Those Catholic Bishops had the audacity to declare that the suffering and death of God’s perfect man and man’s perfect substitute was not sufficient to satisfy divine justice for sin.

The Motivation for Purgatory

Over the centuries billions of dollars have been paid to Roman Catholic priests to obtain relief from imaginary sufferings in Purgatory’s fire. The Catholic clergy has always taught that the period of suffering in Purgatory can be shortened by purchasing indulgences and novenas, buying Mass cards and providing gifts of money. When a Catholic dies, money is extracted from mourning loved ones to shorten the deceased’s punishment in Purgatory. When my dear old dad passed away as a devout Catholic of 79 years, I was amazed at the hundreds of Mass cards purchased for him by well-meaning friends. We have heard of other Catholics who have willed their entire estates to their religion so that perpetual masses could be offered for them after they die. It is no wonder that the Catholic religion has become the richest institution in the world. The buying and selling of God’s grace has been a very lucrative business for the Vatican.

Another motivation for Rome to fabricate the heretical doctrine of Purgatory is its powerful effect on controlling people. Ultimately, the enslavement and subjugation of people is the goal of every false religion, and Purgatory does exactly that. The concept of a terrifying prison with a purging fire, governed by religious leaders, is a most brilliant invention. It holds people captive, not only in this life but also in the next life. Catholic clergy will not say how many years people have to suffer for their sins or how many Masses must be purchased before they can be released from the flames. This dreadful fear and uncertainty is the most ruthless form of religious bondage and deception!

Biblical Support for Purgatory

There is absolutely none! In fact, neither the word nor the concept of sin-purifying fire is found in Scripture. The Vatican was confronted with this in the 16th century when the Reformers protested its practice of buying and selling of God’s grace through indulgences. Backed into a corner, the  Council of Trent added the apocryphal books to its canon of Scripture. Rome now declares there is scriptural support for purgatory in the apocryphal book of Second Maccabees. The council ignored the fact that the Jewish scribes never recognized the apocryphal books as inspired or part of the Hebrew Scriptures. They were never included because of their many historical, theological and geographical errors. Since God is not the author of error, He obviously did not inspire the writers of the Apocrypha. This is why the Apocrypha was never included in the original canon of 66 books.

The apocryphal verses Rome uses to defend its doctrine of Purgatory refer to Jewish soldiers who died wearing pagan amulets around their necks. Judas Maccabees “sent twelve thousand drachmas of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead…Judas hoped that these men who died fighting for the cause of God and religion, might find mercy: either because they might be excused from mortal sin by ignorance; or might have repented of their sin, at least at their death. It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Maccabees 12:43-46). Rome argues that since Judas Maccabees prayed for the dead, there must be hope for those who die in sin. This of course, goes directly against God’s Word which declares, “It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment” (Heb. 9:22). Rome’s attempt to give credence to Purgatory by using this ungodly practice of the Jews, who had a history of disobeying God, is pathetic.

In another attempt to find support for Purgatory, many Catholics point to this verse: “If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire” (1 Cor. 3:15). Clearly, the context of this verse is the testing of a man’s works by fire. The works that survive are the ones done for the glory of Christ and are called gold, silver and precious stones (Eph. 2:10). All the other superfluous works are burned in fire and are called wood, hay and stubble. It is not man’s sins that are being purged, it is man’s spurious works that are being burned and destroyed.

The Biblical Rebuke of Purgatory

God’s Word leaves absolutely no possibility for sin to be purged away by anything other than the blood of Jesus Christ. The beloved apostle John penned these words with irrefutable clarity. He wrote, “The blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” and “all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:7, 9). John did not say “some” sins or “most” sins, but all sin! This soundly rebukes the need for a sin-purging fire. God’s Word also declares, “All things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Heb. 9:22). When Jesus “made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Heb. 1:3). Those who desire to have their sins purged need to trust a person, not a place. The blood of Christ is the only cleansing agent for sin! Those who come to the cross of Christ must come with empty hands of faith, bringing nothing but their sins.

Every blood-bought believer is instantly present with their Redeemer at the moment of death. To be “absent from the body” is to be “at home with the Lord” (2 Cor. 5:6-8). This good news was affirmed by the Lord Jesus with the promise He gave to the repentant thief at Calvary. He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). This habitual sinner did not need a fire to purge his sins.

Catholics who believe in Purgatory need to be asked: “Who is in charge of releasing souls from the purging fire?” It cannot be God because of His promise to believers. “Their sins and iniquities I will remember no more” (Heb. 10:17). After conversion, God no longer counts sins against His children (2 Cor. 5:19).

Purgatory is a travesty on the justice of God and a disgraceful fabrication that robs Christ Jesus of His glory and honor. He alone satisfied divine justice, once and for all, by the perfect and finished sacrifice of Himself. The fatal deception of Purgatory blinds Catholics from the glorious Gospel of grace. It is one of Satan’s many lies which keep his captives from knowing and trusting the sufficiency of Jesus Christ. It is Christ alone that will present us “faultless before the presence of his glory” (Jude 24).

Anything for Money!

“But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
-1st Timothy 6:9-10

It is despicable what some people will do just to make money. America has stooped into the gutters of filth and sin. It is not Hollywood which is primarily to blame, but rather the American people themselves. Hollywood would be absolutely NOTHING if it weren’t for the people who patronize their smut machine of whores and whoremongers. It should be called “Hollyweird.”

Not just Hollywood, but Walt Disney as well. The entire entertainment industry is set on the fires of hell. Increasingly, people these days are willing to strip naked and commit adultery on the movie screen for lustful spenders to watch. It’s all about money. It has become an epidemic in America!!! Sex sells!!! Everything from tool advertisements to cheeseburgers commercials are using naked women to promote their products. It is not only unethical, but down-right sinful. It is an abomination unto God Almighty, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Not surprisingly in this wicked world, the more immoral and wicked something appears to the public, the better it sells. Sodomy has become the latest and greatest means of subliminal advertising. Increasingly, TV commercials are using homosexual gestures to boost sales. It’s just a fact! If you want to sell something, have a half-naked woman advertise it (or have two homosexuals in the commercial). This is because of the evil hearts of men. People love evil! Look at all the violence and sex on TV (and in the godless movie industry). Look at the extremely high ratings of such evil shows as Jerry Springer. Look at the high popularity of Sodomite Rosie O’Donnell. America loves filth! The people of the United States have made Hollywood rich, filthy rich. Even Christian people who will condemn such evil movies are often guilty of paying for the movies themselves. They are a part of the problem as well.

Following is a list of some of the sleaziest actors and singers in the entertainment industry:

  • Olsen Twins
  • Justin Timberlake
  • Jack Black
  • Megan Fox
  • Mischa Barton
  • Lisa Burton
  • Rosie O’Donnell
  • Jessica Simpson
  • Julia Roberts
  • Madonna
  • Jennifer Garner
  • Johnny Depp
  • Britney Spears
  • Ashton Kutcher
  • Angelina Jolie
  • Beyonce
  • Mandy Moore
  • Colin Farrell
  • George Clooney
  • Michael Jackson
  • Lady Gaga
  • Halle Barry
  • Dahm Triplets
  • Brad Pitt
  • Jennifer Lopez
  • Pamela Anderson
  • Hillary Duff
  • Charlie Sheen
  • Jay Z
  • Eminem
  • Quentin Tarantino
  • Ted Danson
  • John Travolta
  • Wanda Sykes
  • Elton John
  • Kelsey Grammer (Producer of such filth as “The Game” & “Girlfriends”)

And thousands more…all helping to destroy decency and family values.

God will judge these sinners, just as he will ALL of us sinners. It is wicked for any people to pretend to have sex for all to watch. Hollywood is straight out of the pits of hell! I would not want it on my conscience that I had acted in a sex scene for millions of people to watch. I wonder how many people went out to commit adultery after being inspired to do so by one of the above actors. I would not want to have to give account to God for corrupting the minds of millions of people, many of whom are little children. Let’s face it, children do watch movies (and Hollywood could care less as long as they’re making big bucks). Sure, it’s the parents fault, but it’s Hollywood’s fault too for making the smut. By the way, if it’s wrong for children to watch something sexual on TV, then it’s wrong for adults to watch it too. It is a sin to watch other human beings strip naked and have sex. Only sex within the bounds of marriage is permitted by God (and not on TV for the whole world to see).

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” -Hebrew 13:4

Anything for money!!! All of the perversion in our society today is because of the greedy men and women who profit from it. The godless Girls Gone Wild series that has overtaken America and the world is straight out of hell. It should be called “Whores Gone Wild” or “Heathens Gone Wild.” They’re making millions. It’s sickening. Pornography has become the number one money-maker on the internet! It’s all about making money at any cost. This is evil!

You can take any young pretty girl who can barely sing and turn her into an instant MTV or Hollywood star. With today’s electronics in musical equipment, anyone can sound like a star. When Britney Spears has faded away like Madonna, the producers will simply find another untalented but morally depraved young girl who’s willing to bare all for the almighty dollar. It’s all in the marketing. If you can find someone to market you, then you are on your way to ill-gotten gain. It’s sad that people will do anything for money, but that is the sad reality of life. It’s been said that everyone has their price. That is simply not true. There are still some virtuous women in this world who will not have sex with their boss for a promotion. There are still some women who will not take their clothes off for anyone but their husband. We are living in a materialistic generation, more so than ever before. Let us decide as Christians to live for Jesus and remain unspotted from the world.

“Ye that love the LORD, hate evil…” -Psalm 97:10

We Live in a Morally Toxic Environment!

Decadence & Depravity

We are living in the “perilous times” foretold in 2nd Timothy 3:17 when children would grow up to become “lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.”

In 1962 prayer was removed from America’s public schools and the Bible in 1963. Today, there’s not a more spoiled-rotten people in the world like the American public. America has forsaken the God of the Bible.

America has become a spiritual vacuum—a mentally-ill, socially degenerate, sicko culture.

Americans are struggling to deal with the social degeneracy that we’re all trying to live with without accepting. There is a huge chasm between living with something and accepting it. But you see, the other side not only wants you to accept what they do, they want you to celebrate what they do, to mainstream what they do; but they’re pushing too hard and society won’t go along to get along. God abhors a spiritual vacuum. America has gone to Hell. God is going to judge this wicked nation!

Since Americans are a hard-headed, stiff-necked people, who don’t like God anymore, who have gotten away with everything they’ve ever done without any repercussions; God is going to judge in ways you cannot imagine.

America has gone insane!

There is a mass-psychosis going on in America, where people suddenly desire a sex change operation. And society praises them! “Oh Larry, you’re so wonderful for becoming Susan. Oh, you’re such an advanced, progressive, human being! Isn’t that wonderful?” The prophets would rip off their clothes and pull their hair out!

Everywhere we turn these days we read and hear the statement, “God bless America,” but why should God bless a nation that rejects His Word? Why should God bless a nation who glorifies the very sins which Christ came to die for on Calvary? The very nickname given to Las Vegas, “Sin City,” is a mockery and utter rebellion against the God of the Bible.

The Men Who Rejected Jesus Christ by David J. Stewart

“In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:”
2 Thessalonians 1:8

I want to share with you something said by one of the wealthiest entertainers in the world…

“One time, I got on my tour bus after a gig and we drove for seven or eight hours. We stopped at a truck stop in the early hours of the morning for a cup of coffee. We were out in the middle of nowhere. And this guy walks up to me and gives me one of these leaflets: “Jesus saves.” And I say to the guy, “Where did you come from? There’s nothing for miles and miles around here.” He says, “I’ve been following you all night.” I says, “You been following the bus all night just to give me this fu%#**! piece of paper? You don’t want to go a church, my friend. You want to go see a fu%#**! psychiatrist.”

-Ozzy Osborne (Source -interview, Ozzy Meets Marilyn Manson, 1997)

Ozzy Osborne hitchhiking to hell
Ozzy Osborne KNOWS the truth, but he has willingly rejected it. Though Mr. Osborne denies being a Satanist, his music is certainly Satanic. Oddly enough, Ozzy is famed for using Satanic imagery throughout his music and performances, yet claims he doesn’t believe in hell.

It doesn’t surprise me so much that a secular entertainer would reject a Gospel tract, but what really impressed upon my heart was the fact that a soulwinner had followed behind a tour bus all night simply to witness to Mr. Osborne.  What Ozzy Osborne considers insane was nothing less than the love of God working in the heart of one of God’s children.  Ozzy’s heart is so cold towards God that he actually told someone who cared about him to go see a psychiatrist.  I guess that shouldn’t be too surprising considering that Mr. Osborne is famous for biting the head off in live bat.  Who needs to go see a psychiatrist?

You know, if someone followed behind me all night to share their beliefs with we, I would be moved by that.  Even if I totally disagreed with the person, I’d at least thank the person for caring about me.  Out of the words of Ozzy Osborne’s own mouth, he condemns himself.  Ozzy admits openly that he rejected the opportunity to receive Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour.  Ozzy didn’t just tell the man to go away, he cursed that little piece of paper that read “Jesus Saves”.  Mr. Osborne said, “You been following the bus all night just to give me this fu%#**! piece of paper?” We’ll Mr. Osborne, that fu%#**! piece of paper was the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Furthermore, Ozzy Osborne remembers exactly what the title of that little piece of paper was…JESUS SAVES!

“In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:” -2nd Thessalonians 1:8

Ozzy Osborne KNOWS the truth, but he has willingly rejected it.  According to the above Scripture, hell awaits Mr. Osborne and all others who obey NOT the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Though Mr. Osborne denies being a Satanist, his music is certainly Satanic.  Oddly enough, Ozzy is famed for using Satanic imagery throughout his music and performances, yet claims he doesn’t believe in hell…

“I don’t believe there’s a heaven upstairs and a hell downstairs. I think we’ve got both hell and heaven here on earth. It’s all here for us.”

-Ozzy Osborne (Source -interview, Ozzy Meets Marilyn Manson, 1997)

Ozzy admits that about 25 parents have sued him for the suicide deaths of their children, alleging his music as the cause (Source -interview, Ozzy Meets Marilyn Manson, 1997).  Mr. Osborne defends his music and so does the Supreme Court on the basis of Free Speech.  In response to the accusations against Mr. Osborne, fellow entertainer Marilyn Manson (real name Brian Warner) said…

“I’ve always said that if someone is stupid enough to want to kill themselves over music, then that’s what they deserve. That’s one less stupid person in the world.”

-Marilyn Manson (Source -interview, Ozzy Meets Marilyn Manson, 1997)

Brian Warner a.k.a. Marilyn Manson
One of the most blatant, anti-Christ performers to come out in recent years is Marilyn Manson. Rock star, Marilyn Manson, proudly boasts: “Hopefully, I’ll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity.” (Spin, August 1996, p. 34)

Warner eerily sounds like Ebenezer Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol,” when he proclaimed…”Then let the poor perish and decrease the surface population.”  Ozzy Osborne and Marilyn Manson are icons to young and middle-aged rockers around the world, revered literally to the point of worship in many cases.  Brian Warner (Manson) claims that he attended a Christian school while growing up (which prohibited him from listening to such bands as Queen, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath).  Warner actually attributes his Satanic music career to having been denied such music as a child.  In short, he blames Christians.

Though Brian Warner’s claims might seem logical to some, they are simply excuses and malicious attacks against God and the church.  The bottom line is Brian Warner is a bitter man against God.  Just as Ozzy Osborne, Brian Warner is without God…

Rock star, Marilyn Manson, proudly boasts:

“Hopefully, I’ll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity.”

Ozzfest 2003
Ozzy Osborne and Marilyn Manson are NOT just men without Jesus Christ, they are also men who have deliberately rejected Jesus Christ. Many of their lyrics mock the Word of God and Jesus Christ.

Ozzy Osborne and Marilyn Manson are NOT just men without Jesus Christ, they are also men who have deliberately rejected Jesus Christ.  Many of their lyrics mock the Word of God and Jesus Christ.  Ozzy is also famed as the former lead singer of the Satanic band, Black Sabbath.  In one of the more popular songs of Black Sabbath, Iron Man, Ozzy Osborne personifies Satan as the “Iron Man,” proclaiming that he “kills those he wants saved.”  For Ozzy Osborne to deny any belief in heaven or hell and claim not to be a Satanist is simply absurd.  Both of the men presented in this article are in desperate need of salvation, but more than likely they will both burn in hell-fire due to the stubborn rebellion and hardness of their hearts against the truth of God’s Word.  God will NOT be mocked, a man will reap what he sows (Galatians 6:7).  Both of these wicked men can still be forgiven and saved, but they MUST come to God in repentance.  God will surely receive them if they’ll only repent of their unrighteousness and come to the Saviour in faith.  ONLY through Jesus Christ can anyone go to heaven.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” -John 14:6

How about you my friend…have your ever been born again?  I plead with you not to be foolish like Osborne and Manson…they are hellbound. God grant that right now you will confess your sin and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.

Fundamentalism vs. Apostasy by Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley

Bible Text: Jude; Genesis 1

Preached on: Saturday, March 2, 1969

Martyrs Memorial Free Presbyterian
356 Ravenhill Road
BT 5 Belfast, Ulster
Northern Ireland

Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley

I trust you will open your New Testament with me at this epistle of Jude.

In every evil age that we read about in God’s Word there has always been a challenge to that evil age, a challenge to that darkness of that evil age, a challenge to the leadership of the apostasy of that evil age. And there has always been—thank God—the triumph and the victory of God’s people in an evil age.

You know, there’s some people and they live in a spiritual defeatism and they say, “Well, things are going to get worse and worse and the devil is going to have a field day in that day Christ is going to be revealed and so on and so forth and we can’t do anything about it.”

I believe, friends, not only that we can do something about it, but I believe God Almighty is going to do something about it and I believe that we have a responsibility to share the triumph of Christ in an evil age.

The darkest days in Church history were always the brightest days for the Church of Jesus Christ. When they were burning the saints of God, thank God the gospel burned with mighty fire. And thank God it was said in Scotland when they burned Patrick Hamilton, the first martyr of the Scottish Reformation, that everybody his smoke blew upon became a Christian and left the harlot, scarlet Church of Rome.

We need to discover that in the darkest day God has victory for his people. “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” [1] And thank God for the faith once for all delivered to the saints, [2] the faith of God’s elect people.

Now do you know that when the Bible opens it sets down the great principle in regard to the confrontation against darkness. First few verses of the Bible set down a principle that is worked out all through the Scriptures. So let’s open the Bible at the first chapter of Genesis and when you come to verse two, after the declaration, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,” [3] you read, “And the earth was without form, and void,” [4] and then you get mention of the darkness. Darkness! And we are confronted today in our day with darkness. And the darkness doesn’t come so much from secular society as it comes from religious society. The greatest darkness of our day comes from darkened men who are blind leaders of the blind, darkness in the pulpits, darkness in the colleges, darkness in the universities, darkness in the assemblies, darkness in the conventions, darkness in the council of churches; ecclesiastical, religious, spiritual darkness! Darkness covers the earth and gross darkness the people. [5]

But then when you come down to verse three, thank God, you have light. So God doesn’t leave the darkness unchallenged. What God did in creation he is still doing today.

The Lord Jesus Christ said, “My Father worketh…and I work.” [6] God the Father is still working, hallelujah! And he is working by sending forth light.

Listen. “God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness [Hallelujah!], hath shined in our hearts.” [7] What glorious light when God shines into our hearts.

So you have light, light confronting, challenging the darkness. But you have something else. Between the darkness, the darkness of verse two and the light of verse three you have, praise God, two things. You have the Spirit of God and you have the Word of God. “The Spirit moved upon the waters. And God said…” [8]

That is God’s Word.

The Spirit of God.

“When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard [what?] against him.” [9]

I like that word “against.” There are things that you and I are against. Yes, we are against them. I am against the pope. You remember that. I am against the World Council of Churches. I am against the National Council of Churches. I am against the great apostate denominations whether they be Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Baptist or called by any other name. I am absolutely and totally against them from the top of my head to my big toe. I am against them, every bit of me against them.

And I want to tell you, brethren, when you go to a little country town to start a church you let people know you are against something. You let them know you haven’t come as a sob voiced sissy to be another pulpit ornament two times on Sunday, that you are not a soft pedaling, fence straddling cream puff pie preacher, that you are a man of God with fire in your belly and you are going to preach the Word with power.

The pulpit, brethren, is a throne and kings sit upon the throne. And every time you get into your pulpit—it may be a small, little pulpit in a small little church—but, thank God, you are a king and you are going to preach the King’s Word, hallelujah! And it does something. It shakes the place. It’s the Bible. That’s what Luther had. He just had a Bible, but he gave the pope spiritual rickets and the pope has been suffering from them ever since. Yes. You have got the Bible, the Word and the Spirit.

So you have the principle.

Ah, but what is the outcome? Do you know what the outcome is? God divided. Separation is always the outcome. That’s what heaven…separation. And you have darkness and then you have light. And you have the Spirit of God and you have the Word of God and—glory to God—you have separation right there in the first chapter of Genesis. And the Bible is all about that. That is what the Bible is all about.

Now I can’t stay in Genesis today. Now let’s look at Jude. This epistle is about fundamentalism. That is what it is about. It is fundamentalism versus apostasy. And right down through this epistle you can see the fundamentalist stand here and you can see over against it the stand of the apostasy. And fundamentalism and apostasy don’t dialog.

Let me say, friends, a fundamentalist disputes with the apostate. He doesn’t dialog with him.

I am quite happy to be called a fundamentalist. I like to be identified with those that are fighting the Lord’s battles.

You know, there are some fellows would like to be called fundamentalists, but they have no right to the name. They are fundamentalists, pseudo-fundamentalists. They come in to the fundamentalist nest, they would use the fundamentalist’s money and they would destroy the fundamentalist stand. Yes. You need to cast them out. You need to finish with them once and for all. I hope you understand that. You’ll not need a dictionary to understand when I am through this afternoon. You’ll understand all right. Yes.

The Bible says, “No other foundation can any man lay than that which is laid which is Jesus Christ.” [10] A fundamentalist is a person who has no other foundation but Jesus Christ. He is built upon the Rock of Ages. And, thank God, no potency will disintegrate that rock. It will stand forevermore.

Now there are five views of fundamentalism in the epistle of Jude. You get fundamentalism in its persons and you find out who the true fundamentalists are. It is a good thing to identify them, isn’t it, to know who the fundamentalists really are.

In this day when people want to go one way one day and another way the next day, it is a great thing to be able to identify them; say, “Those are the fundamentalists. That is a fundamentalist Church.”

Then we have not only fundamentalism in its persons, but you have fundamentalism in its preview and you have a preview of the fundamentalist battle in the past. But, you know, this battle didn’t start yesterday. It didn’t start with the modernistic fundamentalist war that you had in this country and we had in our country when higher criticism came in like a flood. Do you know where it started? It started one day when the devil challenged God Almighty. That’s when it started. This war that we are in started in heaven and God started a war.

You know, some people say, “We don’t like churches that there’s wars in, like these fighting people. Why can’t we have peace and everything be nice?”

I had a woman came to me some time ago. She said to me, “I don’t like your church. You are always battling. There is always a scrap, a fight on. You are always fighting.” She says, “In our church we have perfect peace.”

I said, “Madam, I have been in many a graveyard. There’s plenty of peace there, the peace of the dead. You can have that. We don’t want the peace of the dead. We want to be in the battle for the Lord.”

And the Lord declared war upon the devil. Apostasy is the offspring of hell, the begotten of the pit. That’s what apostasy is. That’s why it hates the blessed Son of God, challenges the deity of my Savior and the sinless purity of the incarnate Christ. So it is of the devil. It is begotten of the pit, apostasy.

But, thank God, we have a preview of the fight and it is encouraging. There was a man called Enoch. He didn’t belong to the World Council of Churches. He was an old fashioned preacher of the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Before the Lord came the first time he was preaching the Second Coming, this man Enoch. And he walked with God in a dirty, filthy, degenerate, apostate age. He walked with God and he cried out. What a sermon he preached against the hard speeches of ungodly sinners.

Man, you study this book and you will get a preview, yes.

And then we have the devil fighting over the body of Moses. That is a very interesting one, isn’t it? And Michael the archangel had a rough time that day and he found that angelic strength couldn’t deal with Satanic strength, but he found that God’s strength could deal with the devil. And he says, “The Lord rebuke you.” [11] “I may not be able to deal with you, Lucifer. I may not be able to silence you, Beelzebub, but God almighty will silence you. Amen.”

Thank God we can call in the Lord. It’s a great thing to be able to call in the Lord when you are having a rough time, bring the Lord in. He will handle the apostates all right, yes, the great champion of the cross, Emmanuel, victor. He is able to deal with all apostates.

So you have a preview. Then you have in this great passage, this epistle, the program of fundamentalists. And I want to tell you that evangelism is not the first in the program. I want you to get that. Oh, there is evangelism in the program and don’t misunderstand me. I am an evangelist. I am preaching evangelistic campaigns all the time and I believe in soul winning with all my heart and soul and a preacher that doesn’t win souls get rid of him. He’s no use. That’s right. If I was in a shop selling books and I never sold one you wouldn’t keep me. They’d say, “Get him out. He’s no good. He can’t sell.” And a preacher that doesn’t win souls, he is no use. You have to win souls for the Lord. And I want to tell you God will give you souls for your hire. He will give you souls for your hire.

But you ever remember this, young man, that you bring forth your fruit in season and every period in the Church is not a revival period. Every season is not a revival season.

It’s easy, you know, to be on fire for God and praise the Lord when revival is on and people are getting saved. But old Habakkuk said, “When there is no oxen in the stall, when there is no food in the larder, when there is no harvest in the field, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.” [12] And until you learn that you will never be a true man or woman of God. To put your rejoicing…

You remember they came home and they told the Lord about the great mission that they had, the campaign they had and the devils were subject to them and the Lord said, “Don’t rejoice because you have been successful. Rejoice because you are saved, your name is written heaven.” [13]

Oh, you will have a hard time at time. The sun will not shine. There will be dark nights you will have to go through with the Lord.

The program is not, first of all, evangelism. The first thing in the program is contending. You get that in verse three. You don’t get the evangelism until you come down the chapter to verse 22. “And of some [of them] have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire.” [14] That’s where you get the evangelism. But the first thing you do is contend, yes.

I think that we would need to get back to Scripture and we need to get our priorities right. The fundamentalist has a program. And then we have fundamentalism in its purity. It’s a pure thing. And I am sad when I see fundamentalism in your country. It hasn’t come to our country, but we have a fundamentalism that has deteriorated here in the United States of America where the Church is trying to win an ear for the gospel with things that are polluted. And I want to say that to you today. Young man, there is only one way to build a church. It is with that book. That is all I have got. I have no gimmicks. I have nothing. But let me tell you I have a book and that book will build a church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [15] And you are not called. Young man, let me say this to you. You are not called to be, first of all, an organizer and, secondly, to be a manager and, thirdly, to be a promoter. You are called to be a preacher. That is what you are called to be, a preacher. And you go and preach it. And you say, “Well, if I don’t have…”

Listen. You don’t need anything. You get on fire in the pulpit and people will come out to see you burn. They will say, “There is a fire up the road. Come on out.”

We had a great preacher in our country called William P. Nicholson. He was a great revivalist. And he had a little church in the heart of Scotland and he couldn’t stir it. And he got down one day on his knees and he said, “Lord, stir this sleepy, little, half damned village and do something.”

W.P. Nicholson, when he was at the height of his ministry in our country, it was nothing to see 1200, 1400 people saved in one campaign of three weeks. He discovered something. He discovered that the book will do the job. And when you have to turn to anything but this book there is something wrong. Search your heart. This Word will do it. It is a pure thing. It is a holy faith we have. It doesn’t need the gimmicks of the devil or the worldly methods. It just needs a pure faith. Give me a holy man with faith in his soul and a Bible in his hand and he will shake the community God puts him into. He’ll shake him. He doesn’t need anything else. He doesn’t need to say, “If I get 150 out to the morning service you can put shaving soap all over me. I’ll swallow a goldfish if we reach the 500 mark.” Yeah. He doesn’t need that. That’s polluting. That is polluting the gospel. Away with it. It is not part of the fundamentalist witness.

And I want to tell you. When you go in for that, the next thing you will be in ecumenical evangelism. And I find these churches that go in for that, then, to go to ecumenical evangelism. And then they don’t take any stand on the issue.

Oh, there is nothing stands up to testing like holiness of heart, a dedication to the Lord, a desire to be like Christ. It was Jonathan Edwards of New England who preached the great sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” that cried out in prayer, “Oh, to be as holy as it is possible for a justified sinner to be.” That should be the prayer of our hearts.

Fundamentalism has its purity. And then, bless God, it has its preservation. God preserves it. Do you know why God preserved this school? Because it stuck to the book and it kept to the standards. That’s why. Stick to the book and keep to the standards.

“Oh, it’s not popular. If I take a stand I lose people.”

Better lose people than lose God. Better have nobody with you and have God for you than have the crowd with you and God against you.

As W.B. Hinson the great fundamentalist leader on the west coast of your country said, “There is something worse than an empty church. It is an offended God.” And so it is. Thank God there is a preservation of the fundamentalist way.

Isn’t it great that we are in the same great conflict that Abel was in? I’m glad Abel believed in the blood and he fought that old Unitarian Cain, yes, that unbloody Unitarian Cain. He fought him. And what happened? He became a martyr. And you will become a martyr if you stand for God, yes. And if they can’t kill you, they will kill your reputation. But don’t worry about it. You’ll survive. I have had everything said about me that could be said about any man, everything. I have had thousands of enemies. But if God be for you, who can be against you? [16] Oh, let me tell you, friends, the Lord will preserve us if we do what is right.

You know, I pray a prayer continually. I say, “Lord, if ever this mind of mine suggests that I should compromise, put a shroud on me. Put me into the coffin and get me out of this world.”

I had a great father, a wonderful man of God. He was a preacher, a fundamentalist preacher. Anything I know he taught me. And he used to say to me, “It is not how you start the race that counts. It is how you finish it.” And I want to have a good finish.

Do you know there are men who have destroyed all they have done at the end of their days by their folly and foolishness because they left off the anchorage? May the Lord preserve us to the end.

I want to finish with my guns blazing against the devil and his crowd. I want the last sermon that I preach to be 10 times hotter against the devil’s crowd than the first one. I want the to go out fighting the battle.

Do you remember that great Mr. Valiant-for-the-Truth? And when he passed over the river in Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress he said, “I carry my scars with me as a testimony to my Lord that I loved him.”

Have you got any scars? I’m glad I have a few scars in my ministry. They are tokens that I have loved Jesus with all my heart. And he says, “I leave my sword to those that will take it up and fight the Lord’s battles. And I just long to see the face of the king.”

Oh, I want to tell you, friend, you will be called many a thing. But you have got to take a strong, bold stand and be certain about it and find out where that fellow stands, that other preacher stands. And let your people know where he stands. And when somebody comes to town with a big name don’t be afraid of him. If he doesn’t stand for God, go after him. You have got a weapon that can cut chunks out of him and that is the Word of God. And when you are finished with him… Many years ago when I was a young preacher Leslie D. Weatherhead, the president of the Methodist Conference in England came to our city. Leslie Weahterhead was an arch apostate. He is now in hell. He has gone to his own place. He was the man that said that Jesus Christ was the bastard child of Zechariah, John the Baptist’s father and Mary who was a prostitute of the temple. That is what he says in his book, The Christian Agnostic. That is about as vile a thing as anybody could say.

So I said that as he had come to the city I wanted to confer a new degree on him. And I publicly conferred on him the title G.O.V.

And, boy, the press came after me. They said, “What does that mean?”

Generation of Vipers. That’s what it means. And I tell you we had some fun with Leslie D. Weatherhead. He never forgot his visit to Belfast.

He wrote afterwards to the press and he said, “That fellow Paisley is too quick with his sword.”

Hallelujah! Best testimony I ever had. Amen, yes. You couldn’t be quick enough with the sword.

My brethren, we have got to take a stand against certain men. And you have to back down. Don’t be backing down.

I know preachers and when Billy Graham comes to town they say, “Well, I am not going to say anything.”

Well, Billy Graham came to my town and he preached in the big Presbyterian Church that our congregation originally came out of and I put a huge advert in the press and I preached on him. Both services on the Lord’s Day I called his number, told the people. And people said of me, “You’ll hurt yourself.”

I said, “I don’t care whether I hurt myself. I am not going to let the Lord be hurt. No matter about…”

If you are looking, my friend, to yourself you will never get anywhere. You look to the Lord. Honor the Lord and the Lord will honor you.

But if I had only started on preaching on Billy Graham when he came to town people would have been confused. But I have been preaching against Billy Graham for years and I have my people well taught. If he comes to Belfast, I’m telling you, he will be in trouble because the people know all about him and his romanizing and his apostatizing and his backsliding and his compromise. Tell the people. Let them know. Yeah, let the people know. Don’t run around whispering in their ears. What you have heard in secret, shout from the housetop [17] That’s what the Lord says. Make no apology. Don’t clear your throat and blow your nose and say, “I’m terribly sorry. I have to say these things.” Nobody has any time for a man that makes apologies for what he is saying. Say, “I’ll not apologize. I’ll not take anything back I am going to say. This is what I am going to say and if my speech could be a thunderbolt and every word a lightning stroke, glory to God, let it be!”

That’s the way you preach. Get at it. Get at it. It is not pleasant language. It is Holy Ghost language and I pray every day that God will give me Holy Ghost language in my preaching like the prophets of old, what men they were. I wish Elijah was around today. I would love to be with Elijah when he would be challenging the prophets of Baal. Man, he really went. And he mocked them, too. Imagine mocking them. Oh, if you did that today these lovey-dovey crowd would say, “That’s not Christ like to mock them.”

Let me tell you something. The only standard of Christ likeness is revealed in the New Testament. Christ likeness is not what some old apostate professor thinks Christ was like. Christ likeness is what God says about his Son. And when the Lord went after the apostates in his day he didn’t say, “Lovely liars, delightful serpents, beautiful sepulchres.” No, sir, he didn’t preach like that.

I want to be like my Lord. Just let me come up to the Lord’s standard. You know, the way the Lord started his ministry? He started his ministry by cleansing the temple. He went into the temple with a whip and he scourged them. And he overthrew the money changers and he let all the pigeons off to fly around the temple court. And he cleared them out.

Tell you, “Oh, you should deal with them in love.”

I’ll tell you what love is. True love “rejoiceth not in iniquity.” [18] That’s true love. It doesn’t rejoice. It rejoices in the truth.

It’s a devilish thing, a damnable thing and it has got to be fought with all our heart and all our soul and all our mind. Oh to be a pure son of Levi, to stand outside the camp with the Lord in this evil day. “Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.” [19]

I like Moses. Moses reckoned that the reproach of Christ was greater riches than the treasures of Egypt. [20]

Oh, that we may gladly bear the reproach of Jesus Christ. He is a wonderful Savior, isn’t he? He wore a crown of thorns, allowed his hands to be pierced with nails. Hung up on a tree to die, stark naked and ashamed. And, bless God, he did it for me. And all I can say is, “King of my life, I crown thee now. Thine shall the glory be. Lest I forget thy thorn crowned brow, lead me to Calvary.”

Reformation Overview: The Anabaptist

Here at last are the ones I can identify the most with. They were called the Radicals and for their time they were. By being baptised as adults they were denying the efficacy of their childhood baptism and in so doing incurred the wrath of not only the Roman Catholic Church but those Protestants who had not yet seen the full light of the Scriptures. They had not seen that baptism actually plays no part in salvation but is instead by Faith Alone without any good or indeed ritual works. (Eph 2:8-10)

“Anabaptist” is a term that means “rebaptizer” and refers to what is known as the Radical Reformation.

The Protestant Reformation began in Germany in 1517. It sprang up in a different but similar form in Zurich in the early 1520′s, begun by Ulrich Zwingli, Conrad Grebel, and Felix Manz.

A disagreement over infant baptism resulted in Ulrich Zwingli having the support of the Zurich city council, while Grebel and Manz were told to submit.

They did not. Instead, along with Georg Blaurock and a few others, they rebaptized each other upon a confession of faith and began a free (non-state) church in Zollikon, just outsize Zurich. Thus, Ulrich Zwingli went on to become one of the three major Reformers, while Grebel and Manz were responsible for the Radical Reformation or Anabaptists.

Persecution shut down the church in Zollikon, but Anabaptist preachers spread throughout German and Dutch-speaking countries of Europe. They were persecuted by Roman Catholic and Protestant states alike.

At first, they were a shining example of the primitive Christian spirit, zealous, filled with love and an evangelical spirit, and steadfast in persecution. Sadly, within 50 years strife over rules and leadership split them, beginning in Holland and rapidly spreading through the entire movement.

Today, their most numerous descendants are the Amish and Mennonites, though the German Baptist Brethren, Hutterites, Bruderhofs, and numerous splinter groups also survive. Their influence may actually be growing in the 21st century due to interaction with the home school movement.

Unfortunately, modern Anabaptists, who often refer to themselves as “plain people,” are known more for their distinctive dress, Pennsylvania Dutch language, and refusal to drive cars than for zeal for Christ.

They also continue to divide over minor issues.

Many of us who carry our Anabaptist names with pride … have returned in thought and practice to the world. Those of us who haven’t done that, clinging to the traditions and the language of our forefathers, have split into almost innumerable little groups. (Peter Hoover, The Secret of the Strength, p. 270)

What was easily the most holy and most apostolic of modern Christian movements has degenerated into something unrecognizable as Christian. However, their holiness and influence on the fledgling state Protestant churches, especially on the early Baptists, can be credited for much of the freedom that we enjoy in the western world today.

These early Baptists frequently paid the ultimate price for their simple faith. To the shame of the early Reformers it was the Protestants who often did the persecuting

I am not alone in finding it ironic that many Baptists are Calvinists as they would have been put to death under the reign of Calvin.

Biblical Repentance by Joe Fogle

“…I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful…”
Jeremiah 3:12

Biblical Repentance

The Bible makes it clear that when a person remarries after divorce they commit the sin of adultery (Matt. 5 & 19; Mark 10; Luke 16). When a man and woman enter into a marriage union they become one flesh. This one flesh union lasts “as long as you both shall live.” Marriage is “unto death do us part.” There is no act of man that can cause the one flesh bond to cease. Neither legal decree nor sin by either spouse can cause the one flesh union to end. This is because “what God has joined together let not man separate” (Matt. 19:6). Because the one flesh union remains until the death of either spouse when either spouse remarries after a divorce they commit adultery. The reason that it is considered adultery is because in God’s eyes they are still one flesh. If they were not still married then it would not be called adultery. One can only commit adultery if at least one party in a sexual relationship is married.

When one sins against the living God confession and repentance for sin is required. To confess means to say the same thing about one’s sin that God does. There can be no excuses as to why one commits a sin and no down playing of the significance or severity of the sin. When we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9). Along with confession of sin comes repentance.

In the same passage of Scripture John warns his readers “if we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness we lie and do not practice the truth” (I John 1:6). Those who profess the name of Christ are expected to obey the teachings of Christ. They are to walk as Christ walked and repent of their sins. Christ came to call sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32) and warned that “unless you repent you will likewise perish (Luke 13:3). Jesus commissioned His disciples to preach that men should repent (Mark 6:12). John the Baptist warned people that they should bear fruit in keeping with repentance (Luke 3:8). The Apostle Paul warned those who had sinned and not repented of their unclean acts and sexual sins (2 Cor. 12:21).

The Greek word translated repent is metanoia. Literally it means to “change one’s mind.” It can also mean to show remorse for sin. In a general sense it means to have a change of mind regarding sin in general and a conversion to belief that Jesus is the Christ. In a limited sense it can be used for changing one’s mind about specific sins. The context of usage shows that the change of mind leads to the change of actions. The Bible knows nothing of academic repentance that changes only one’s mind without a change in actions. In order for actions to change the mind must first be converted. It is the converted mind that leads to the change in one’s actions.

Since the Bible teaches that the sin of adultery is committed when a divorced person remarries it must be determined what constitutes biblical repentance. There are some who believe that they have not sinned by remarrying after divorce. The New Testament states seven times in six passages that remarriage after divorce is adultery. Just because some do not believe these actions are sinful does not make it so. They will still be judged according to the biblical standard.

There are some who believe that repentance for remarriage after divorce needs to be academic or intellectual only. One must only give a verbal confession for sins committed. They admit that remarriage after divorce is adulterous but do not believe that repentance should lead to a change in actions. The Bible teaches that when a person enters into a marriage with a divorced person they enter into an illegitimate sexual relationship with another person’s spouse. That is why it is called adultery. Since this relationship is adulterous at its inception the only logical conclusion is that it remains adulterous through its entirety.

Some believe that remarriage after divorce is a sin at its inception but then somehow either instantly or gradually ceases to be sin. This is impossible. Continuing in sin cannot cause it to cease being sin. Since sexual relations following remarriage after divorce are called adultery each subsequent sexual act committed must also be considered adultery. One cannot have sexual relations with his neighbor’s wife and then claim that since he committed adultery with her once he is now free to continue sexual relations with her. Jesus did not say that they commit adultery only during the first sexual act and then it stops. Paul uses the future tense when he states that the remarried woman “will be called an adulterous” (Romans 7:1). This is contrasted with his statement “And such were some of you” (I Cor. 6:11). Paul uses the imperfect tense to show that they were forgiven of the sins listed in verses 9 and 10. He warns them against further practicing theses sins because those who do “will not inherit the kingdom of God”.

Repentance in Scripture means to change one’s mind about sin and then to change one’s actions to align with that belief. Admit it and quit it if you will. In order to repent of any sexual sin one must cease that sin. The case can be made that people do fall into sin and then need repent. This repentance would include a conscious decision to try to avoid further committing the sin for which they claim to be repentant. One could fall into the same sin again after repenting but divorce and remarriage cannot be considered this type of sin. Remarriage after divorce is a conscious deliberate act. One does not fall into the sin of remarriage after divorce. To remain in this type of adulterous relationship is a conscious deliberate act.

If a practicing homosexual comes to Christ it is expected that they repent of their sin and refrain from further homosexual acts. If a person continues in this sin his conversion is suspect since the fruit that is borne does not match the verbal profession. If a professing Christian enters into homosexual relations they should be disciplined by the local fellowship for sexual sin and treated as an unbeliever until they repent (Matt. 18; I Cor. 5).

If an unwed person in a fornicating or adulterous relationship comes to Christ it is expected that they repent of their sin and refrain from further sexually immoral acts. If a person continues in this sin his conversion is suspect since the fruit that is borne does not match the verbal profession. If a professing Christian enters into adulterous relations they should be disciplined by the local fellowship for sexual sin and treated as an unbeliever until they repent (Matt. 18; I Cor. 5).

The Bible calls remarriage after divorce adultery. Those who are remarried after divorce should be encouraged to cease their adultery. If a divorced and remarried person comes to Christ it is expected that they repent of their sin and refrain from further adulterous acts. If a person continues in this sin his conversion is suspect since the fruit that is borne does not match the verbal profession. If a professing Christian enters into adulterous relations by remarrying after a divorce they should be disciplined by the local fellowship for sexual sin and treated as an unbeliever until they repent.

Adultery committed by remarrying after a divorce can neither instantly nor gradually cease to be adultery. If it is adultery at its inception it remains adultery as long as sexual relations are continued. Those who claim that a person who has committed adultery by remarrying may then continue to commit adultery by remaining in that marriage are in error.

There is only one logical and biblically consistent position: If a person wishes to repent of the sin of adultery committed by remarrying after divorce they must cease further sexual relations. They must admit it and quit it if you will. True repentance is not verbal admission only. This concept is foreign to Scripture. One must cease or at least try to refrain from continuing in a sin in order to claim biblical repentance. Remaining in a relationship which God calls adulterous does not bear fruit in keeping with repentance. Biblical repentance requires both admission and action.

Something Everybody Can Do by Lester Roloff

“Men ought always to pray.”

This subject is important because it’s the difference between “the haves and the have nots.” One of the disciples said to Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.” He said, “Men ought always to pray.” There are some things that are only done by prayer plus supplementary fasting. It’s strange what people lean on when they get into trouble, but oh, sad to say, the average church member uses God just like a man does a spare tire. They throw Him in the trunk and say, “Stay there. If I have a blowout, I’ll call on you.”

There are various kinds of prayer. Secret prayer is the best and ought to be practiced the most. Apart from secret prayer, forget about all the rest of it. A man who doesn’t pray by himself has no right to pray in public. A man who had rather pray in public than in private is a Pharisee and a hypocrite. If you can’t be prayed up when you get to church, don’t try to catch up in the church house. I used to hear, when I started preaching, “The Sunday morning service reveals the popularity of the church and the Sunday School. The Sunday night attendance reveals the popularity of the preacher, as to the crowd that comes back to hear him preach.” That used to be the great night of evangelism and the great themes and revival themes would be preached on Sunday night. “The Wednesday night prayer meeting reveals the popularity of the Lord.”

There is also family prayer, group prayer and public prayer. Then there are the places of prayer. They prayed in the upper room. They prayed in houses. They prayed at the riverside. They prayed on beaches. They prayed in jail houses. The Bible said, “When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together.” The power of God came down. They prayed with power. That’s the secret of the success of God’s people through the ages — prayer.

What are the requirements? This is the practical side of praying. Keep in mind now, that Brother Roloff is not the final answer as the teacher of prayer. Jesus is. But, if I’ve learned anything through the Bible and in practice and experience, I’ll pass it on to you tonight. I know the Bible says, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” And then He said, “For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Those are tremendous promises.

We’re coming now to the requirements of a successful prayer life. What must I do to get my prayers answered? What is the thing that will make you keep on praying? It’s hearing from Heaven! I’m going to reverse that. The thing that will reveal your faith is praying when no answer comes. That’s the supreme test. I’ve gone over a number of chapters in the book of Job again. In one of them, Job said, “Oh that I knew where I might find Him.” He was looking for God. Can you imagine? He was the best man God had and he couldn’t find Him. He said “Lord, I want you to show me why you’re doing this to me. We’ve always been on good terms and you’ve been my best friend. I’m not against you and am not going to turn against you, but I need an explanation and I want you to give it.” But the Lord didn’t pay him any attention. I imagine the Lord just kind of smiled and said, “Later on. After a while.” So finally Job said “I went forward and He wasn’t there. Backward. I couldn’t perceive Him. On the left hand where He doth work. I couldn’t behold Him. On the right hand where He hid himself and I couldn’t see him.” That’s all the directions isn’t it? Forward, backward, left, right. He said “I couldn’t get one glimpse of Him.” Then he said, “But He knoweth the way that I take and when He hath tried me, He will bring me forth as gold. My feet have held His steps. His way have I kept and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of His lips. I’ve esteemed His words more than my necessary food.” That’s the secret of it right there. It was the most severe test he ever had. It wasn’t when all of his ten children died. It wasn’t when he lost all of his camels, oxen and sheep and goats and chickens. It wasn’t when he lost all of his servants. The greatest loss was not when Mrs. Job came and said, “Just curse God and die.” That wasn’t his most severe test. That was just part of it. Then three fair-weather friends came and looked at him and they didn’t speak for seven days. Not one word. Finally they opened their mouths and skinned him and scalded him and scathed him and ate him up alive. But that wasn’t his greatest test. Do you know what the greatest test was? You’ve never been there until you’ve reached this place, and that is when you look up to God and there’s not any God. You just pray like you used to pray and there’s no answer. There’s no response. There’s no God. There’s no feeling and your faith is severely tested. But let me tell you something. You’re going to have to learn to believe God when you cannot perceive God. You’re going to have to learn to “faith” Him when you can’t feel Him. Unless you do, you’re going to be in bad shape before this thing’s over with. There’ll come a time when God reserves the right to cut you completely loose from Him and then see what your faith will lead you to do. “In all this, Job sinned not nor charged God foolishly.”

What are the requirements for real successful praying. Number one. This is the unknown quantity. Mark X here, because it marks the spot. PURITY. That’s right. Psalm 66:18 says “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” If I regard… If I say to Brother Mike, “If you see George, give him my regards.” That means to pass my love on to him. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. That cuts off God’s willingness from me. God said, “Of course I can hear you, but I will not, because you’re giving your regards to the devil.” That’s what He’s talking about. Psalm 66:18.

Number two. FRUIT. Matthew 21:21-22. The disciples were talking to Jesus about the fig tree. They said, “That fig tree is gone. All You did was put your Word to it. You said `Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever,’ and it withered away.’” When God puts His Word on you and you refuse to bear fruit, He has the right to say, “Just let him wither.” Then you’ve got to wither. It’s the only thing you can do. “They marveled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away! Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, you shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.” Now, that marvelous golden text, “All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”

In Matthew 18:18-20 we read the greatest contract in the Bible. This concerns FAITH. “Verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Does that still mean what it meant when He said it? Do you mean to tell me that we can bind the devil and bind the adversary? Do you mean God will give Christians binding power today? If He meant it then, He means it now. There must be FAITH — real faith.

Now turn to Mark 11:22-23. Oh, how precious are these promises. That’s all we have to go on. “Have faith in God… Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass: he shall have whatsoever he saith.” Now, verse 24, the other golden text: “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray…” When you get on your knees and get in the spirit of prayer, the Bible says He will give you your desires. He says IF you will delight yourself in the Lord, and you ought to be a delightful prayer warrior. “When you pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

That leads us to one more thing. FORGIVING GRACE. In verse 25 He said, “When you stand up to pray, you’d better be sure you’ve forgiven those who have wronged you.” That’s no problem for the Christian, but it’s impossible for the unsaved. I talked to a man yesterday. who said “I have bitterness.” I said “It will ruin you.” There’s no substitute for the tenderness of Jesus. No matter how much you hate the devil, you’ll love people. No matter how much people might hurt you and try to destroy you, you’ll love them while they’re doing it. If you grow in grace, you’ll thank God for the day the enemies arose so you could learn how to treat your enemies. But He said “If you do not forgive, neither will your father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.” How serious it is. My whole prayer life depends on my forgiveness of others. An unforgiving spirit will completely ruin your prayer life. You can spend all night here at this altar, and you can holler, “Oh, God. Lord, I’ve got to have an answer.” You’ll never get it. He said, “When you come to the altar with your gift and then you had a very sober, serious, sacred thought, `Somebody’s got something against me,’ you leave your gift right there and you go and first be reconciled to your brother.” You’d better hear me tonight, there’s no such thing as two brothers not being reconciled. If you are brothers in Christ and sisters in Christ, there’s a way for both of you to get together because you have the same Christ in both of you. What am I talking about tonight? It’s simply if we’re brothers. Do you know what He said? He said, “You leave it right there.” To me, that’s faith, because when you go to your brother… “But Lord, I don’t have anything against him. He’s got something against me. Let him come to me. He’s the one that did it. I didn’t.” The Lord said “Well he doesn’t have enough grace. I think you have a little praying grace and you ought to have a little more. You go to him. Will you do that?” He goes out there and after a while both of them come back with a gift. He said, “I’ll give mine,” and the other one said, “I’m going to give mine too. Let’s pray for each other.” That’s what He’s talking about. Do you have unforgiveness tonight toward anybody? Don’t go to bed tonight until you say, “Lord, what a delight to let You give me grace to forgive. I want power in prayer.” We’re spiritually insane to let something stand between us and getting our prayers answered.

Why don’t you grow up? Why don’t you let Jesus give you the answer and say, “Lord, thank you for forgiving grace.” I’ve never forgiven anybody with my forgiveness. It’s always been His. I’ve never had grace, made up any grace, manufactured any grace, whipped up any grace, picked up any grace. God gives me grace.

Oh, this sweet neglected privilege of prayer. Folks why would it be necessary for Brother Roloff or Brother anybody else to have to speak long and many sermons on prayer? Have you read your Bible? Have you ever noticed one good and great man who didn’t pray? Have you ever heard of a great preacher who wasn’t great in his place of prayer? Oh, may the Lord search us out and help us. Time is so short. Eternity is so long. We must not let our prayer path be clouded with the clouds of unforgiveness, doubt or impurity or uncleanness, an unclean attitude or spirit. Oh, may God bless you as you say, “Lord, oh, get me back to my prayer place and get me back to the prayer spirit.” “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10.

Jeremiah 33:3 reminds us of God’s promise to answer when we pray. “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

The Power Of Prayer

Power Of Prayer – How powerful is it?
The power of prayer should not be underestimated. James 5:16-18 declares, “…The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.” God most definitely listens to prayers, answers prayers, and moves in response to prayers.

Jesus taught, “…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:20). 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 tells us, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” The Bible urges us, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18).

Power Of Prayer – How do I tap into it?
The power of prayer is not the result of the person praying. Rather, the power resides in the God who is being prayed to. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.” No matter the person praying, the passion behind the prayer, or the purpose of the prayer – God answers prayers that are in agreement with His will. His answers are not always yes, but are always in our best interest. When our desires line up with His will, we will come to understand that in time. When we pray passionately and purposefully, according to God’s will, God responds powerfully!

We cannot access powerful prayer by using “magic formulas.” Our prayers being answered is not based on the eloquence of our prayers. We don’t have to use certain words or phrases to get God to answer our prayers. In fact, Jesus rebukes those who pray using repetitions, “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him” (Matthew 6:7-8). Prayer is communicating with God. All you have to do is ask God for His help. Psalm 107:28-30 reminds us, “Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.” There is power in prayer!

Power Of Prayer – For what kind of things should I pray?
God’s help through the power of prayer is available for all kinds of requests and issues. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” If you need an example of a prayer, read Matthew 6:9-13. These verses are known as the Lord’s prayer. The Lord’s prayer is not a prayer we are supposed to memorize and simply recite to God. It is only an example of how to pray and the things that should go into a prayer – worship, trust in God, requests, confession, protection, etc. Pray for these kinds of things, but speak to God using your own words.

The Word of God is full of accounts describing the power of prayer in various situations. The power of prayer has overcome enemies (Psalm 6:9-10), conquered death (2 Kings 4:3-36), brought healing (James 5:14-15), and defeated demons (Mark 9:29). God, through prayer, opens eyes, changes hearts, heals wounds, and grants wisdom (James 1:5). The power of prayer should never be underestimated because it draws on the glory and might of the infinitely powerful God of the universe! Daniel 4:35 proclaims, “All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: ‘What have you done?’”
